A special wall hanging

Hiya all,

Today I am here to show you the wall hanging I have made for the WWI Centenary. It’s been a long time coming, but I have finally finished it. I was determined to do so, as I really didn’t want to let down the men that had fallen in our family in the war (I’ll be doing a separate post about them on the 4th – the day war was declared in Britain). Enough of my rambling, here are the pictures:
Here I had cut out green pieces for the hills and backed them with bondaweb. With a bit of a trim they finally fit on the white backing.
With it finally fitted I backed it with some wadding and set to work machine sewing the hills down.
After that I began the arduous task of cutting out several poppies to fill up the green space. Thankfully I had made a few from a few years ago when I first had the idea to make it, so it didn’t take as long as I had expected.
It started to look really pretty and then I got daunted. I had to embroider the date onto it and I couldn’t bear to do it, in case I screwed up the whole thing. So I dived into it and kept going.

I’m so glad I did it, even if it did go a bit bad towards the end. I really should learn how to embroider properly, but as it was the first proper time I’ve done it, I’m not too fussed. I decided that for the back I wanted a bit of colour (a green) and to do some more poppies in a cross to finish it off.

I’m so pleased with it. At the time I preferred it to the front, mainly because it was simplistic. I added a tag at the back and set to finish it (i.e leave it alone for a few weeks).

So after my pal left today (expect a blog post soon sometime this week), I decided I was going to finish it. As the 4th of August is looming I really felt the pressure to finish it. Mum helped me to do the binding and sew it on, then this evening I finished it off by hand. I apologise to my friends for ignoring them a bit as I powered through the exhaustion to finish it.

The back is kind of messy (first time binding) and I need to add the hanging device (for lack of a better word) but other than that it is complete!! I’m so proud of it and as soon as I can get dad to put it up I will include it in a future blog post. 🙂

So after all the stress it was very worth it and I hope you’ve enjoyed looking at this project. 🙂 I’m sorry the picture quality and text was a bit shoddy, but I’m not used to writing in this style. xD

On another quick note, if you’re interested by this post I’d like to share with you the Lights Out project. It is from a quote of Sir Edward Grey and on the 4th of August you can turn out all your lights and leave one on. That can be the tv (to watch the coverage of events) or a candle or so on. For more information the link is here. I hope you can participate, as it is a lovely idea. I can’t wait to light my candle.

That is all for now, my friends. I will see you on Monday. 🙂

Big News

Look, it even got capital letters. It must be important! 😀 Well, good day to you all, unless it’s night-time. Then good night? No, that sounds weird. Sorry.

Do you remember when I wrote about all the plans I had? I said I had a super big top-secret one. Well, now is the time to tell you about it! 😀 I think I’ve mentioned before that I do like a bit of photography, now and then. Well, a while ago I had a mini photo shoot with my mum for what will be a new venture. It’s been very hard to keep it a secret from you all, but I can finally show and tell! *happy dance*

We turned the photos I had taken into cards and voilà! Here they are in all their glory! 😀

How exciting!

How exciting!

It’s quite weird seeing my creations on a card, although very exciting! Hopefully you all like them. They are for sale on Etsy here, if you’re interested in them! 🙂

I think that’s all for now, just wanted to say about it really 😀 Hope you’re all having a good day/night and I’ll see you soon. 🙂

PS: One day I’ll do the post I’m supposed to do . . . One day . . . xD

Why I’ve been missing for a bit

Well, it’s that time of year. Ya know, Christmas. I totally haven’t been panicking about whether I’ll get everything made in time. Nope, not at all. *hides* I have managed to make four presents though and bought another. That may not seem like a lot to some people but it has taken me forever to do this. xD I can’t post pictures of the gifts as the recipients will probably be reading this, and I’m sure they’re dying to know what they’ve got. I can, however, post some pictures of decorations that I’ve been making (yes, it’s been a very crafty few weeks!). Here ya go:

These have fallen down now *sigh*

These have fallen down now *sigh*

Please excuse bad photography here xD

Please excuse bad photography here xD

I’m not really sure what’s happened to the pictures, they’ve gone a bit weird. I’m too tired to fix it though so you’ll have to cope with them being a bit weird. xD But yes, I went a bit 1940s with the decorations. The last decoration I showed used a tutorial from the IWM, which is fab and so simple to make. Quite pleased with the two I made, I might make a few more in a bit. 🙂

Apart from that I’m not particularly in the Christmas spirit, although I think that’s better for me, that way I don’t get over excited and make myself feel shattered for Christmas day! I have, however, decided on an outfit for Christmas day. It’s decidedly 1930s/1940s (whodathunkit?) but apart from that you won’t find out anything else until I blog my outfit (which will probably be sometime in the new year depending how tired I am after the festive period). Ooh I feel like a fashion blogger . . . Okay maybe not, I’m not good at fashion unless it’s historical!

Having said all that, I have been going to quite a few Christmas things with my parents, a couple of craft fairs and we’ve been making our way around the garden centres. It’s so nice to be able to do Christmas at our own pace compared to last year (*shudder*), I think I’ve said that before but it’s true!

Currently mum is finishing off a quilt that will look lovely in my room, it follows a pattern from the lovely Lynne at Lily’s Quilts. I’m not one to like many of the modern-day quilts that are around but this one that will go perfect with my old-fashioned style bed covers and my generally 40s ish room. Yay. 😀 Plus it’s handmade so that makes it all the more better. Gotta love hand-made things. 🙂 Can’t wait to snuggle under it and watch Christmas films (who knows, it might make me feel more Christmassy). 😀

Oh, I also have spent a few days reading through old letters from my family that we’ve kept from many years ago. It’s lovely to get a sense of their characters from the letters. Some even had a few helpful bits of information regarding my mum’s side’s family history. Yay 😀 It helps having a little bit that backs up our information!

Right, that’s all from me today! I’ll try and get another post in before Christmas but we shall see! Actually, I probably will, as I’ll want to show off our tree. xD Look forward to that! I’ll also try to use my proper camera rather than my phone. xD

See you all soon!

Hello again!!

I thought I’d write a quick post, like I (sometimes) do. Today I pampered myself (I say pampered. I had a shower and painted my nails. I was a bit too hungry/tired to do anything else. Ah well. 😉 ) and did some sewing. I finally finished one of the Christmas presents to be sent overseas, which is a relief! I think I’ve got one or two more to make and then I’m done for overseas presents. Yay!

Talking (only briefly) about Christmas, is anyone else sort of excited and not? I’m half excited because I am well enough to enjoy it (and I’m not stressing out about moving house like last year, thankfully) but also really not because I foolishly  thought I could make presents this year (and people keep reminding me it’s December soon. Shush people xD). I don’t mind making presents, I love crafting, it’s no problem to me but oh dear. I do forget that I’m not superwoman! It is a case of doing it slowly (but not too slowly or they’ll never get made) but I’m not very good at pacing myself (as my psychologists found out when I pretty much refused to do any sort of pacing program. Hehe, that’s another story that I’ll probably tell sometime soon. ;D) so I end up spending an afternoon sewing and then not being able to do anything for a few days. Ooops.

Anyway, moving on from that. xD I don’t think I have any other news for you . . . I’m hoping to go to my town’s light switch on later this week, because it’ll be our first time properly seeing everything (again, unlike last year ;D) in the new place so yay! Hopefully it’ll get me in the spirit of Christmas. I’m feeling a bit Bah Humbug, ooh I feel a song coming on!

Well, I shall leave it here for today. Hopefully next time I see you I will have made a few more Christmas presents! Of course, I can’t show you until after Christmas but there we are. 🙂 It’ll be worth the wait (hopefully!).
See you all soon!

Quick craft update

Hello there! 😀

This post may not make much sense as I was up for an hour early this morning so I think my brain has kind of shut down a bit. Oh well, we’ll see how I do!

I promised a while ago that I’d show you how far my hexies had got so here you are! Ignore the Frankenstein that photobombed, I couldn’t be bothered to tidy up. xD
It has changed a lot since I last posted about it! I’m half proud of it, which is good for me. xD Like I’ve said before, it’s going to be a while before it’s a double quilt but it’ll be worth it! I haven’t done much to it in recent weeks, but I’ll pick it up again once I’ve made all the Christmas presents. xD

In other news not much has been going on. I’ve been feeling really tired for the past week or two and only the day before yesterday have I started to feel more human, such fun. I did manage to read a book during my time on the sofa, so I’ve got my reading bug back again which is awesome. 😀 I’ve missed reading.

Oh oh, I did some more translating of my great-granddad’s 1942 diary, I’m now in February 1942. I’ve got used to his handwriting so there aren’t as many question marks on the page now. It also helps that he wrote in ink for most of it, sadly when we get to October/November 1942 it’ll be harder to read as he wrote in pencil. Oh well, we can try our hardest to decipher it!

My nan is coming over later, so I may be blogging about something she brings with her. *nods* I’m being mysterious because I don’t know that much about it, apart from it was probably my great-grandmother’s. You can see why I’d be excited, can’t you?

Anyway, that is all for now. I’m off to play a bit of a video game before my nan gets here.
See you soon!

Crafty times ahead

Hello all! 😀 I’m back with another post, with a cuppa. I’m well prepared for this cold weather. 😉

You may have noticed I’ve changed the appearance of my blog again, it will become clear soon. By soon I mean next year at the earliest. Just cross your fingers that it all works out, okay? 😀

Anyway, this week, while mum has been recovering from her op, I’ve spent more time downstairs than up here in my little den. I haven’t wanted to disturb mum, so I took down my hexies, C-word presents and knitting to entertain me. It’s been going quite well! Where do I start first . . . Let’s start with the C-word presents! 😀
This is how far I’ve gotten with one of the presents, as you can see to the left is a bit more of it but I decided not to show you in until it’s December. Sorry! 😀
Then we have this. 😀 This is going to take a bit longer, as I had to cut the parts out, I’ll also need to machine sew it and well hm. Thank goodness it’s 3 months until December, plenty of time. xD

Next on my list would be hexies but I forgot to take a picture of them. I’m bad at that, aren’t I?! I’ll say this, it’s progressed a lot since I last showed you. It’ll still be a while before it’s big enough for a double quilt!

Then we get to knitting. On my twitter I have told everyone about the fun awful adventures I’ve had with it. Let’s just say, at the time I took this picture, it was all going really well. I mean, really well. Better than my knitting had ever gone before.
Then I was like “You know what, it’s quite cold so I’m going to get my blanket and snuggle up to continue my knitting.”. I think that’s where it all went wrong. I somehow managed to drop a stitch, attempted to pick it back up again and increased my number of stitches to 31. I had started off with 30, so it wasn’t too bad but oh I could have cried. So I undid it all (again. For the 13th time) and tried again. I dropped yet more stitches. Now it is downstairs, on the windowsill probably wondering what it did to offend me. Maybe I’ll pick it up later. It’s highly unlikely though. xD

I also promised pictures of a certain skirt I finished. Here y’are!

Mum did the hem for me, as it was a bit tricky and she probably didn’t trust me to do it very straight. xD
I bloody hated doing the hook and eye. So wonky. xD

Today I’ve taken a quick break from all this creativity by visiting my aunt and cousin. It was lovely to catch up with them. 😀 I have no idea how kids have such energy, it’s crazy! We did have fun playing with blocks, using golf clubs as walking sticks (I think he’s watched my mum and nan too often! :D) and playing with the noisy books. Lots of fun. 😀

As I’ve mentioned a couple of times in this post, the weather is getting colder here in jolly (heh) old England and it is currently raining. All our weather reports at the moment are “You’re going to get rain, sorry. Oh, and tomorrow a bit more.” which is lovely. xD It’s not too bad though, it means the jumpers are back out from the depths of the wardrobe and my comfy knit dress comes back out. It also means lots more soup and more roasts. Oh yes, I like this weather, even if I will complain about it. 😉 It does also mean my Goth music gets more use and the candles are dusted off. Yes, I do like this a lot. 😀

So, after rambling on, this is already over 600 words long now. xD My plan for the rest of today is hexies and maybe knitting. This could change, of course. I might get distracted by Animal Crossing. That’s quite likely.

Anyway! I’ll leave you with this for today, I’ll try to take some more pics of all my projects for another update either this week or next week. 😀

See you soon!
